Tropical Paradise Showdown: Green Island vs Fitzroy Island?

If you’re planning a trip to Cairns soon you’ve probably looked at Green Island or Fitzroy Island. Two popular destinations that often make it to travellers' lists, both are located off the coast of Cairns, just a quick hour boat ride away offering a slice of paradise with unique features and attractions.

If you’re short on time or limited on money and only want to do one then luckily I am here to give you my personal opinion on both!
Rating both on their accommodation, views, marine life etc…

Accommodation:

Fitzroy Island boasts an array of accommodation options, ranging from luxurious beachfront resorts to budget-friendly eco-friendly cabins and even a campsite. While it provides modern comforts, it's worth noting that Green Island offers a more diverse range of choices to suit various budgets. The island's commitment to sustainability means you can enjoy your stay guilt-free, knowing that efforts are being made to protect this pristine environment.

Green Island on the other hand, offers a more limited selection of accommodation, mainly centred around a stylish beachfront resort. While it provides luxurious modern comforts, it's worth noting that Green Island doesn’t offer camping or accommodation for this on a smaller budget.

Beaches:

Fitzroy Island is captivating, with its own share of beautiful beaches. Nudey Beach, located on the island, has consistently been voted one of Australia's best beaches. It's a paradise for snorkelers, and the rainforest backdrop adds a unique touch to the beach experience, there are a ray of beaches around the island to choose from, some more populated than others.

Green Island is equally renowned for its stunning beaches, with powdery white sands and crystal-clear waters. The picturesque surroundings make it a perfect spot for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkelling. The island's main beach, known as the Green Island Beach, is easily accessible and ideal for families and is situated on the left hand side of the island for better snorkelling the beach on the right of the pier although smaller is packed with more marine life.

The Views:

Fitzroy Island offers its own share of breathtaking views. Hike up to the summit of Fitzroy Island, and you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding reef and coastline - a must do when visiting the island whether you’re there for the day or staying for a few nights.

The views from Green Island are also beautiful, overlooking the ocean and the Great Barrier Reef. Visitors can take a stroll along the boardwalks around the island
and find their perfect spot to watch the sunset over the ocean.

Marine Life:

While Fitzroy Island offers snorkelling opportunities, as well as paddle boarding and scuba diving there are plenty of ways you can see the marine life at Fitzroy and you
will be blown away with what you see having seen stingrays, clown fish, turtles and a ray of other fish.

One of Green Island's standout features is its exceptional marine life. Snorkelling and diving enthusiasts are in for a treat, as the island is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Colourful coral formations and a wide variety of marine species, I have had the pleasure of seeing octopus, white tip sharks, starfish, eels, a variety of fish and even the odd crab! In my opinion, Green Island takes the crown when it comes to diversity and abundance of life under the sea.

To finish off both Green Island and Fitzroy Island offer unforgettable tropical experiences, but your choice depends on what you value most in a getaway. If you want to stay for a few days then I would recommend Fitzroy Island with its diverse accommodation options, pristine beaches, stunning views, and a vast variety of marine life. However, if you’re looking for solely a day trip and are more interested in spending time in the water with incredible marine life then I would suggest Green Island, although smaller its unique charm, gorgeous vistas and unparalleled marine life it was an experience we can’t wait to go back to. Ultimately, whether you seek adventure, relaxation, or both, these two islands promise a slice of paradise Down Under.

Till next time!

See you soon,
